The heavily backed Night In Vegas hit the jackpot on the opening day of the Betfred St Leger Festival at Doncaster, landing the lucrative Weatherbys £300,000 2-Y-O Stakes.

Ridden by jockey Charlie Bishop, the 5-6 favourite was content to sit comfortably in midfield while Dorigo and Satellite Of Love set the early tempo. As the field made their charge for home, Bishop timed his challenge to absolute perfection. Shaken up entering the final furlong, the Eve Johnson Houghton-trained colt smoothy hit the front with 100 yards left to run, pushing out to secure a half-length victory for owners Kennet Valley Syndicates, who incredibly won the exact same race last year with Calendar Girl.

Following the horse’s recent success at Newmarket, trainer Eve Johnson Houghton delighted in the victory, jokingly calling the massive prize money “lovely jam to get” for a horse that previously placed in both the Coventry and Vintage Stakes. Rather than immediately stepping the two-year-old back up into Group-race company this autumn, Johnson Houghton expressed a clear desire to “go for the money” while eligible. Future plans for the prolific money-spinner remain flexible, with entries lined up for the Two Year Old Trophy at Redcar, the Tattersalls October Auction Stakes, and a potential season finale in a conditions race at Ascot on Champions Day.
